Trump Administration Offers Nearly 2 Million Federal Employees a Paid Resignation Option.

The Trump administration has introduced a new initiative allowing federal employees to opt for a "deferred resignation." Under this program, workers can agree to resign now but continue receiving their salaries through September.

According to a senior administration official who spoke with NBC News, approximately 5%-10% of the federal workforce is expected to take this option. This could result in savings of around $100 billion. The offer is available to all full-time federal employees, with exceptions for military personnel, U.S. Postal Service workers, roles tied to immigration enforcement and national security, and other positions excluded by specific agencies.

In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt emphasized that American taxpayers fund federal salaries and deserve employees who are committed to their roles. "If federal workers prefer not to work in government offices and contribute to the nation's progress, they are free to pursue other opportunities. The Trump Administration is offering a generous eight-month payout to those who choose to resign," she said.

The initiative was communicated to federal employees through a newly established system that enables the administration to email all workers simultaneously. The email included a draft resignation letter for review. Employees interested in resigning can simply reply with the word "resign."

The resignation window opens on Tuesday and will remain available until February 6. The email sent to federal workers also stated, "If you decide to stay in your current role, we appreciate your dedication to serving the American people to the best of your ability. While we cannot guarantee the future of your position or agency, rest assured that if your role is eliminated, you will be treated with respect and provided the protections afforded to such positions."

This program reflects the administration's efforts to streamline the federal workforce and reduce costs while offering employees an alternative if they no longer wish to continue in their roles.
